Why this is Powerful
The political debate around climate change in Australia has stagnated. The tone is being set not by inspiring leaders, but by vested interests – by big polluters, and by politicians looking to score points and win the media cycle. Power Shift is about shifting the power, and the conversation in this country. It’s about bringing together a generation of committed young people to demonstrate our passion on this issue and demand real action on climate change from our country’s leaders!
We know that Brisbane is super important in the lead up to the next election (2013) because there are 13 marginal seats – that’s heaps! Everyone will be looking at seats in Brisbane in the coming months and years to see how they respond to issues like the carbon pricing legislation.
Which way did they swing last election? It was a real mix – there are a whole bunch of seats taken by both Labor and the Coalition, and it really is places like this where elections are won and lost. For this reason, we think that having a Power Shift in Brisbane can have a profound impact.
The proposed climate legislation is likely to be reviewed in Parliament in October The proposed climate legislation is being voted on in the House of Representatives on October 12th, days before Power Shift. The senate votes on November 7th, less than three weeks afterwards. We think this is a great opportunity to make our voices heard in one of the most politically influential cities in the country!
We are building a generation-wide movement to solve the climate crisis. We do this by educating, inspiring and mobilising young people across the country.
It is young Australians who will face the consequences of decisions made today. That’s why we have the vision that will deliver the short-term political impact and long-term cultural change needed for a safe climate future.
The AYCC is entirely youth-run. We represent more than 30 of Australia’s largest youth organisations and nearly 70,000 individual members.
Climate change is the challenge and opportunity of our generation – it’s not about politics, it’s about ensuring a safe future for young people across Australia.
Power Shift is an event to strengthen the generation wide climate movement in this country. It will be 3 days of inspiring speakers, workshops, actions, and networking with over 1000 young Australians from all around the country.
In September and October, thousands of young people will come together for two incredible summits in Perth and Brisbane. Together we’ll engage with the solutions, make our voice heard, and launch a campaign to transform the country.
The Power Shift Program
You don’t get to be Australia’s largest youth-run organisation without meeting some incredible people along the way.
