Power Shift isn’t just about listening and watching – it’s about taking action!

We’re looking for some enthusiastic Power Shifters to play a special role in our action.

Huge amounts of fun guaranteed!

Power Shift is all about making our voice heard: as young people we get climate change, we have a positive vision of the world we’re trying to create, and we’re ready to get started on the solutions. And over the years at AYCC we’ve learned that dancing is a pretty good way to get that message across.

Power Shift 2011 will be no exception. We’re going to take Brisbane by storm with a huge dancing flashmob right in the centre of the city. But that’s not all we’re going to do – this is going to be a flashmob with a twist!

This flashmob will start with a music video-style lip dub leading into the flashmob. It will be fun, upbeat, and it will tell the story of Power Shift – of young people coming together and taking action on climate change.

But to pull it off we need some help!

We’re looking for about 100 Power Shifters to be extras in our lip dub scene. You’ll be part of one of our film shoots during Saturday and Sunday before Monday’s big flashmob in the city. You don’t need any special skills and the shoots will all take place during breaks, so you won’t miss any sessions.

If you’re interested in being part of the lip dub, please register your interest below. This will let us plan the shoots and give you any important info beforehand.

But for me, attending Power Shift was like going to the eye doctor to get my first pair of glasses and finally being able to see all the leaves on a tree. This experience came just months before I graduated from university as I was seeking clarity in how to proceed with my professional life. With the new lenses, I suddenly had an enhanced vision of my future: I did not need to choose a single path to continue working on public health, climate change or education; rather I found these passions coalesced. Here’s what I wrote about my first Power Shift just days after it ended in 2007:

Through Power Shift I’ve become empowered by a shift of ideas. Three passions of mine – to fight climate change, to improve public health in urban areas and to reduce the achievement gap, and hopefully thereby reduce other socioeconomic disparities, in America’s educational system – have been rearranged so that they now interlock. These passions make more sense together, and thus I now make more sense to myself.

Be part of Power Shift 2011 in Brisbane and join the worldwide movement – click here to buy your ticket.

Power Shift Perth brought together hundreds of young people from WA over the weekend.

Here’s what they had to say about their Power Shift experience – and what they would say to anyone thinking about booking their ticket to Brisbane.

As a young person in Western Australia, I’ve never felt like I’ve had an outlet for my interest in climate change. On the weekend, at Power Shift Perth, that all changed.

Power Shift is run by people who are just like you. It’s not just about saving the world and climate change, it’s about bringing people together who are positive, who are motivated, and who will go out there and make a positive difference in the world. I’ve left feeling empowered, energised, and like I actually have the skills and support network to do something in my local community.

Come to Brisbane for the national Power Shift. If I could go to Brisbane as well as Perth, and do it all over again, I would. Power Shift Perth been the most powerful thing for me that I can remember.

This is the first thing I have ever done like this. I have spent the last 5 years reading papers on climate change and listening to people tell me how bad it is and all I had taken away from that was a sense of dread, terror and powerlessness.

What could I do against such a big problem?

Power Shift has made me feel like climate change is even worse than I thought, but this time I don’t feel scared. I feel like I need to do something – and that I can.

- Jane

Do you ever feel like you want to achieve something? You feel like you have something to give and you want to be a part of something big and powerful? I’ve often experienced that feeling, but I really didn’t know where to start.

Then I heard about this big youth climate summit and I started thinking. At first I came up with a bunch of reasons not to go, but in the end I thought, “why the hell not?” Surely I can sacrifice a weekend for a good cause!

I am so glad I made that decision. And I want you to have the same powerful experience I’ve had these past three days. I dare you to give three days of your time to our generation’s biggest issue. I promise you that it will be worth it.

This weekend I missed the AFL grand final. I missed it for the first time since I was born. I missed it because I came to Perth Power Shift. Any you know what? I don’t care I missed it. I completely forgot it was even on because Power Shift was so freaking awesome.

The speakers were so amazing and interesting, and I actually got to chat with them. I met the coolest people and have some awesome new mates.

Most of all I am incredible inspired. I don’t feel this inspired very often and I can’t believe how good I feel. If you decide to go to Power Shift Brisbane I guarantee you will have an awesome time and be hugely inspired – you will not regret it.

An important part of being an effective leader is praxis: combining action with reflection. To be effective, one needs to spend time acting, as well as time analysing approaches and practices. In this post, we’d thus like to highlight the opportunities that Power Shift offers for aspiring leaders.

Power Shift 2011 has one of the richest programs offered by any conference on climate change. What’s most valuable isn’t just the quality of the keynote speakers or the variety of things on offer, but also the opportunity for people to leave this summit having learnt how to make a difference after workshopping with some of Australia’s and the world’s most experienced and successful campaigners. The skills on offer are applicable outside of climate change, and are applicable outside of community organising: they will be of use to anyone who has to think about influence, team work, or effectiveness.

Here are some of the more advanced workshops on offer. We invite you to register your interest in this stream using the form at the bottom of this page.

Session 1, 11:30 am Saturday: Transforming the Way We Campaign
Nick Allardice, who leads Change.org in Australia, will give you all the skills and information to develop a successful campaign strategy.

Nick Allardice is a social change advocate and entrepreneur, with a history of creating and leading high impact national campaigns and organisations on the critical issues facing the world today. He has experience with a number of leading organisations including OzGreen, the AYCC, Oaktree and Make Poverty History. You can follow him on twitter @Nick_Allardice.

Session 2, 2:00 pm Saturday: Project Management
This advanced workshop will maximise your skills in planning and overseeing projects, and effectively managing a team of people. You’ll learn about project management tools such as how to use GANTT charts efficiently, tips for managing problematic volunteer management scenarios, and how to effectively delegate tasks amongst a group of people. Come learn how to be the best project and team manager you can be!

This workshop is run by Nick Allardice and Glen Berman. Glen Berman’s familiaritiy with project management comes from managing several national high profile campaigns during his time at Oaktree. He is also the AYCC’s current General Manager, a role which has endowed him with vast experience in time management, utilising resources effectively, and volunteer relationships.

Session 3, Noon Sunday: Reframing Climate Change
Since 2006, the amount of the public considering climate change a “serious and pressing” problem has slipped by almost 40%. Yet we know people are willing to invest in a better future for their children, that people are concerned about pollution, and that people think current levels of environmental protection are inadequate. What gives?

In this workshop, you’ll learn about the latest research in to how people think about issues and make decisions. You’ll encounter ideas about how neurology, psychology and linguistics interact to shape the way we think and live. Most valuably, you’ll discuss how climate change campaigners can learn from this, shaping the way we talk about the issues in order to highlight our shared values and shared interest in acting.

This workshop is run by Amanda Mackenzie, AYCC Co-Founder, and Nick Moraitis, founder & director of Make Believe. Amanda is currently employed by the Federal Climate Commission, advising on their communications. You can follow her on twitter. Nick, in additional to his role at Make Believe, a communications consultancy, has years of experience in public engagement at both Greenpeace and Amnesty International.

Session 4, 4:30 pm Sunday: There is an ‘i’ in Teiam
Working effectively in teams is crucial to success in almost every pursuit. When organising around climate change, one is often working with volunteers whose commitment and ability vary widely. Managing such a team, empowering its participants, and getting outcomes, is no easy task.

In this workshop, you’ll learn insights in team management that can otherwise only be gained through years of dedicated group organising. The presenters will also draw upon the work of Marshall Ganz, who has done extensive research in to organising and social movements. As a consequence, every team you are in will benefit.

This workshop is run by Nick Moraitis, founder & director of Make Believe, and Sara Haghdoosti. Sara was the Power Shift 2009 Recruitment Director, has been active in the Women’s Movement, and is a Field Organiser with GetUp!

With your Power Shift Brisbane ticket you’ll get exclusive admission to Power Shift Presents – an awesome gig on Sunday night with some great local acts.

The AYCC is thrilled to present Charlie Mayfair, Asa Broomhall and Very Unique Existence,in an all-action, head banging, high-energy concert to celebrate climate action, on October 16th.

Charlie Mayfair

After the release of their debut EP in 2010, Charlie Mayfair have had a momentous year with a performance at the Sunset Sounds festival in January, as well as supporting nationally acclaimed songsmiths The Panics. They have recently returned from an East coast tour in support of their latest single ‘Tell Her’, which included a sold-out show at The Zoo in Fortitude Valley. The track has gained support from national youth broadcaster Triple J and has built much anticipation for their forthcoming second EP – set for release later this year.

Asa Broomhall

Australia’s favorite Rock/Roots larrikin, Asa Broomhall, is “a star on the rise, and for all the right reasons” (Scene, July 2009). From clubs and festivals all over Oz, to supporting national and international acts, Asa is sailing on the momentum of his fourth independent and self-produced release: Revelry Road. His stunning instrumental prowess, sharp and cutting lyrics, and clear vocal style combine to bring a dynamic show with a dose of mischief. Now returned from tours through the UK, the US and Canada, Asa is bringing the music in his soul to share with us at Power Shift Presents!

Very Unique Experience

Very Unique Existence, a positive consciousness rock band, will be doing a special Enviromotional performance for Power Shift 2011. Rich Latimer has had a strong connection to the environment since a young age, growing up removed from society living in nature, without electricity or running water. Very Unique Existence brings an earthy, acoustic line-up, including Didgeridoo, Djembe and Cajon, and aims to enhance our emotional connection to the environment and provide an emotional release for our responses to climate change. The band’s song ‘This World’ was selected for the Australian Anti-CSG CD, and Rich is making the song a free download for Power Shifters. Grab the song and follow the movement at http://aycc.veryuniqueexistence.com

Power Shift is a global phenomenon, with conferences having happened all over the world. It’s not surprising then that Brisbane’s Power Shift will be privileged to host some international participants. In this post, Kirk Serpes from New Zealand’s Generation Zero shares why he is coming to Power Shift.

Generation Zero is a campaign created by young kiwis that aims to fight for our generation’s right to a safe climate at this year’s general election. We are an alliance of around 10 small and large youth organisations that have come together in order to push candidates from all parties to show a greater level of ambition on climate policy and a responsibility towards the next generation. Since March we have grown from a small group of 6 individuals to a thriving organisation with around 100 active members and around 6000 supporters.

Our journey to this point was a largely due to groups like the Australian Youth Climate Coalition that a few of us met and worked with at the international climate negotiations in Copenhagen and Cancun. The AYCC, and other global groups from the US, the UK, and China, showed us what could be possible. These were groups of young people, not very unlike ourselves, working together in professional organisations to create smart campaigns, run events and empower a generation to take on the special interests that are putting our future at risk. We realised that we were part of a global youth movement and that we were more than capable of creating a coalition of young people and organisations within New Zealand to do the same.

Kirk in Mexico for the climate negotiations

All this year, we have been inspired by the work AYCC has been doing in pushing for a carbon price, and our brave friends being arrested outside the White House for protesting against the Keystone XL pipeline and the many other worthy initiatives that we see everyday from our friends in the global youth climate movement. The friends I have in the International Youth climate movement and the brave and creative work they do is source of daily inspiration. I just have to hope onto facebook to see what’s going on Mexico, or Nepal or London these days to know that we are not alone in our cause, and our frustrations. I can realise that I share my vision for a better world with tens of thousands of people all over the Earth.

We’re closest to the AYCC, so we hear a lot about what is being done in Australia. When one of our Australian AYCC friends sent us an invite to attend the 2011 Power Shift, we figured it would be an amazing opportunity to come over and learn from the experience so that we could run our own in 2012. The momentum and energy previous Power Shifts in Aus, the US and the UK created for the climate movement is exactly what we would like to replicate. And there is no better way to learn than to attend one yourself and experience it yourself. So four of us are coming over to Brisbane in a couple of weeks to learn but also to share. To share our story and our journey to hopefully show young Australians that they are part of a global youth movement, and that in every corner of the world there are young people standing up for our shared future. We look forward to meeting you!

Power Shift 2011 contributes to the growth of a diverse, dedicated and visionary global youth climate movement. This movement worked on this video together last December to highlight our shared values. It’s easy to forget that we are part of something that stretches the globe – but this video can help us to remember.

A message from Greg Combet, Minister for Climate Change and Energy Efficiency, to Power Shifters.

The Australian Youth Climate Coalition, as part of the ‘Say Yes’ Coalition, supports the Clean Energy Future Package. While we would like to see less money going to the big polluters, and more investment in renewable energy, the package is a good first step towards an Australia 100% powered by renewable energy like the solar or wind power – you can read some of our analysis and commentary here, or watch our video summary.

However, what is most striking about Minister Combet’s message is his thoughts on the power of young people to make a difference. We’ve recently witnessed the role young people played in Egypt, where their resilience and vision for a better existence contributed to the massive social movement that brought down a dictator. Power Shift is about adding to the growth of a similarly powerful youth movement in Australia – one that is strong enough to bring about the huge change we need to solve the climate crisis.

While the climate crisis is already hitting home and affecting communities and peoples the world over, the Minister also reminds us that it’s our generation who will have to adapt to the consequences of decisions being made by the politicians of today. The pollution of our atmosphere, and the delay from our politicians in solving this problem, have created an environmental debt that we, as young people, will have to be paying off. Looked at in this way, it’s a simple issue of responsibility for businesses to reduce their pollution, and government to support them to do it. The problem shouldn’t be left for future generations to deal with.

Power Shift will be a great place to engage with these ideas and more. There’ll be a political panel, allowing us to ask questions of politicians from the ALP, the Coalition and the Greens. There’ll be workshops on campaigning that will empower us to make deep change, as young people in Egypt have. Most importantly, there’ll be 1000 young people, united against the threat of the climate crisis, and resolute in seeking out the opportunities.

Have your say below – what do you think of the Government’s efforts to address climate change so far?

Why this is Powerful

Why Power Shift 2011?

The political debate around climate change in Australia has stagnated. The tone is being set not by inspiring leaders, but by vested interests – by big polluters, and by politicians looking to score points and win the media cycle. Power Shift is about shifting the power, and the conversation in this country. It’s about bringing together a generation of committed young people to demonstrate our passion on this issue and demand real action on climate change from our country’s leaders!

Why Brisbane?

We know that Brisbane is super important in the lead up to the next election (2013) because there are 13 marginal seats – that’s heaps! Everyone will be looking at seats in Brisbane in the coming months and years to see how they respond to issues like the carbon pricing legislation.

Which way did they swing last election? It was a real mix – there are a whole bunch of seats taken by both Labor and the Coalition, and it really is places like this where elections are won and lost. For this reason, we think that having a Power Shift in Brisbane can have a profound impact.

Why October?

<del datetime="2011-09-27T01:51:08+00:00">The proposed climate legislation is likely to be reviewed in Parliament in October</del> The proposed climate legislation is being voted on in the House of Representatives on October 12th, days before Power Shift. The senate votes on November 7th, less than three weeks afterwards. We think this is a great opportunity to make our voices heard in one of the most politically influential cities in the country!

Who is the AYCC?

We are building a generation-wide movement to solve the climate crisis. We do this by educating, inspiring and mobilising young people across the country.

It is young Australians who will face the consequences of decisions made today. That’s why we have the vision that will deliver the short-term political impact and long-term cultural change needed for a safe climate future.

The AYCC is entirely youth-run. We represent more than 30 of Australia’s largest youth organisations and nearly 70,000 individual members.

What is Power Shift?

Climate change is the challenge and opportunity of our generation – it’s not about politics, it’s about ensuring a safe future for young people across Australia.

Power Shift is an event to strengthen the generation wide climate movement in this country. It will be 3 days of inspiring speakers, workshops, actions, and networking with over 1000 young Australians from all around the country.

In September and October, thousands of young people will come together for two incredible summits in Perth and Brisbane. Together we’ll engage with the solutions, make our voice heard, and launch a campaign to transform the country.

The Power Shift Program
You don’t get to be Australia’s largest youth-run organisation without meeting some incredible people along the way. The AYCC’s Power Shift 2011 features a knock-out program presenting some of the most experienced and inspirational campaigners, young people, and visionaries from Australia and the world. Different speakers will move you, make you laugh, challenge your ideas, or give you new ways of thinking about things.

And although we encourage everyone to use sustainable transport, if you need to fly you can check out a list of recommended flights for Brisbane here. If you take one of these flights, there will also be volunteers at the airport when you arrive to welcome you and point you in the right direction!

Where to Stay?

We have tried to make finding a place to stay in Brisbane as easy as possible, because you will need to organise your own accommodation. This blog post has up to date information on recommended hostels and camping options. You can also visit this facebook event if you are either seeking to be billeted in Brisbane, or are a Brisbaner able to offer a billet to somebody else.

Money Questions?

Tickets for Power Shift are $100 for an individual, and $90 if booked as part of a group. This money goes towards materials, gear hire, venue, staffing, as well as other project costs. Food is not included.

If you are having any difficulties raising money to attend Power Shift, there are a few ideas you can try out:

Ask your local council to sponsor you.

If you’re studying, try asking your institution to sponsor you. It’s a great way for them to strengthen your education.

Consider talking to local businesses that might want to support youth leadership. Even if you can only get $50 here and there, it’ll make things easier for you.

Once you’ve bought your ticket, we make it easy for you to find other Power Shifters to share transport or accommodation.

You can use this template fundraising letter to help you approach people for sponsorship.

It is important to us that as many people as possible can get involved in Power Shift, so there are scholarships available.

The AYCC takes the welfare of its participants and volunteers very seriously. Here’s some information for you and your parents and teachers about how we’ll be supporting you at Power Shift.

Need help travelling to and from Power Shift?

There will be Power Shift volunteers at the Brisbane airport to greet Power Shifters from 6:30am to 8:15am on Saturday 15 October.

The Power Shift Guide, available here, suggests flights from major Australian and New Zealand cities.

If you want to travel by bus, you could contact your AYCC State Coordinator to see if there are people from your state travelling together. (Try posting on our Facebook page)

How does accommodation work?

We have organised supervised hostel accommodation for up to 200 underage Power Shifters. Experienced AYCC welfare officers will supervise the dorm rooms, monitor any medical conditions, lead walking groups to and from Power Shift each day, check that everyone arrives at the hostel promptly each evening and at Power Shift each morning, and hold group meetings each evening in the hostel to check the group’s wellbeing.

It is now too close to Power Shift to arrange further bookings through this process, although you are encouraged to contact the hostels listed below individually. If you do have any important questions or needs on this front, please email powershift2011@youthclimatecoalition.org

Their phone numbers will be available for participants to call at any time during Power Shift activities if they are in need of assistance.

With Brisbane Power Shift less than three weeks away, there’s one question on everyone’s lips – what’s the action going to be?

We’ve got an exciting opportunity for a talented choreographer to join our team and help pull off something spectacular.

This is an amazing project to be a part of – you’ll be given one thousand young, enthusiastic Power Shifters, a team of videographers, 4-6 days paid preparation before the summit, and an all expenses paid trip to Power Shift in Brisbane. In return, you’ll be the creative brains behind one of the biggest stunts we’ve ever attempted.

At the moment the plans for the action are locked in a sealed vault underneath the AYCC office, but for a sense of what we’re after, check out this video from Power Shift 2009 (which has since gotten over 120,000 views on YouTube!)

To read more about the role and for details on how to apply, download the Position Description. If you have any questions, just email lucy.manne@youthclimatecoalition.org. We’re looking to fill this role as fast as possible, so applications will close 5pm Thursday 29 September.

From September 12 to 16, we’re running Build the Buzz, a national competition to get the word out about Power Shift.

This is your chance to get creative, win some awesome prizes, and help us make Power Shift spectacular!

buzz (n.): Anything that creates excitement or stimulus.
- urban dictionary

Power Shift is just weeks away, and it’s time to take our excitement to the streets.

Power Shift is so much more than just a summit – it’s a three-day long youth-run extravaganza, with incredible speakers, music, cutting-edge workshops, a huge creative action, and thousands of amazing young people.

This is going to be pretty spectacular – and next week, we’re running Build the Buzz, a national competition to give a hint of just how huge Power Shift will be.

<fb:like href="http://www.powershift.org.au/blog/build-the-buzz-competition/" send="false" width="450" show_faces="true" font=""></fb:like>

The challenge

Your mission is simple: we give you a message, and you use it to get the word out about Power Shift in the most creative, eye-catching way you can think of.

The entries will be judged on:

1. The number of people you get to register their interest in attending Power Shift (you can download a form to collect their details or use this link online).
2. How many people you reach with the message
3. How creative your entry is

Think street theatre, banner-drops, super-hero costumes, Yes Men style stunts, flash-dances, and creative newspaper letter-writing campaigns (like the gem pictured on the right).

Wondering what to do? For some hints and ideas, download our Tips and Tricks Guide.

The message

The rumours are true: www.powershift.org.au

Prizes

The best group entry will win VIP Power Shift tickets for all the group members, including backstage access during the conference and at the concert. You’ll get to be part of the action behind the scenes, meet all the keynote speakers, and hang out with the bands at the concert.

The best individual entry will win an iPad. Yes you did read that right – a brand new, shiny iPad!

How to enter

Just send an email to buildthebuzz@youthclimatecoalition.org by 6pm Sunday September 18. Make sure you include:

1. Your name, email, phone number, age, and address
2. Whether you are entering as an individual or a group
3. Details of what you did to build the buzz, including photos and a brief description of up to 200 words
4. How many people you signed up and an estimate of how many people you reached

If you have any questions, just post them below. Good luck!

The Power Shift Regional Roadshow has been giving young people from outside the major cities a chance to get involved.

Here’s what Jordan had to say when the Roadshow came to Toowoomba.

Power Shift. I had read the amazing stories, been inspired by the videos, and completely overwhelmed by the amount of young people who all came together with the same goal – climate action. I couldn’t wait until I could join this group and be a part of the movement.

Being from Queensland, I couldn’t believe that Power Shift would be held in Brisbane this year – it meant that finally I would have the chance to get involved.

When I saw that AYCC were holding the Regional Roadshow for Power Shift, I was ecstatic to hear that the it was coming to my own town, Toowoomba! I just could not believe that we had this amazing opportunity to not only learn how to be involved in Power Shift but to establish a Toowoomba AYCC group.

<fb:like href=" http://www.powershift.org.au/blog/toowoomba-roadshow/" send="false" width="450" show_faces="true" font=""></fb:like>

The training day was brilliant. Turning up to a small group of like-minded people all pumped for climate action made me so happy. Many of us didn’t know one another, but as we listened to each other’s stories on why we had come, I realised that we were all here for the same wonderful thing: Power Shift.

As well as learning about Power Shift, we also worked on the establishment of AYCC Toowoomba. Having an AYCC Toowoomba group will just open up so many doors to the young people in Toowoomba who are interested in climate change and want to make a difference.

Getting the group off the ground will definitely be a challenge. Regional towns don’t exactly have a reputation for being progressive, and there is not a lot of exposure to amazing organisations such as the AYCC (that’s all about to change!).

But I know Toowoomba has huge potential, and despite the town’s rather conservative roots I hope that over time the group will expand to neighbouring regions. I’m so excited for Power Shift, because I know that the people from Toowoomba who attend will be inspired, and come back as enthusiastic as me about the future of AYCC Toowoomba. I can’t wait for Power Shift!!

We’re looking for engaging and
energetic young people to run
workshops at Power Shift!

Workshops are a core part of the Power Shift program – a chance for participants to turn theory into practice, learning the skills they need to take action in their communities beyond Power Shift.

We’re looking to offer Power Shift participants inspiring and empowering workshops from a wide range of perspectives and organisations.

The broad themes of the workshop sessions we’re looking to fill are:

Theories of change and social movements
Communicating climate change
Organising for action

There is also space for a limited number of sessions on themes outside of these – so if you’ve got a great idea that’s out of the box, let us know!

To express your interest in running a workshop at Power Shift Brisbane, please email emily.murray@youthclimatecoalition.org with some brief information on:

1.The topic of your workshop (and how it relates to one of the themes listed above)
2. An outline of the content you want the workshop to cover
3. The age or experience level you think your workshop would be suitable for
3.	Any experience you have running workshops
4.	Your organisation

Expressions of interest are due by Friday September 9.

A fantastic article from Elise in SA, published in The Northern Argus paper!

My name is Elise Lavers, and I am a Yankalilla local working at Jetty Food Store and studying a Bachelor of Health Sciences/Bachelor of Secondary Education at Flinders University.

I grew up in Jamestown; a typical farming community in the Southern Flinders Ranges.

The whole town is in existence thanks to the fertile soils, open plains and reliable rainfall that make conditions perfect for the mixed farming of cereal crops and livestock.

Some of my fondest memories of growing up are of days spent yabbying in friends’ dams, bike riding the Maple Trail in Bundaleer Forest, and counting lambs tails for pocket money at the end of a long days’ tailing and drenching (for $1 per hundred tails; big business!).

Jamestown was first recognised as arable farming land by South Australia’s Surveyor-General, George W. Goyder.

In 1865, Goyder plotted a line across South which separated the land that received more than 10 inches of annual rainfall from the land that didn’t.

As Jamestown has always been south of Goyder’s Line, where rainfall is sufficient for successful crops, when I first heard that climate change was threatening to shift the line south of Jamestown towards Clare, I was shocked.

<fb:like href="http://www.powershift.org.au/blog/taking-yankalilla-by-storm/" send="false" width="450" show_faces="true" action="like" font=""></fb:like>

For the first time, I was no longer seeing climate change as just another issue for developing nations that I couldn’t do much about, but as a real issue that could potentially end farming and shut down my hometown. As I tried to express my concerns to friends, my words were often dismissed with a casual laugh and: “ah Lavers, you’re such a greenie!”.

I felt alone in caring, so being a young teenager, I decided there was nothing I could do and it slipped away from the front of my mind.

After obtaining a scholarship to board at Walford School in 2007, I decided to join the school’s environmental committee.

We ran cake stalls, sponsored an orangutan, painted banners, and started battery, fluorescent light bulb and newspaper recycling programs at our school.

It wasn’t much, but it was enough to give me my selfish fix of warm-fuzzies by “doing my little bit”. It wasn’t until this year, my first year of university study, that I realised it was no longer enough to just “do my little bit”.

I joined the Flinders Environmental Action Group and the Flinders Action Group for the Australian Youth Climate Coalition , run by Yankalilla local, Isaac Astill.

While only in its beginnings, FLAG has already run two successful sign-up events, where we spoke with many fellow students and lecturers about the benefits of a price on pollution.

We also collected hundreds of signatures, which we took to a personal meeting with Federal Labor MP Anne McEwan to show the youth support behind a strong carbon tax with direct investment in renewable energies.

However, despite our work, there still seems to be a lack of urgency amongst the population for taking action on climate change.

I was recently selected by the Australian Youth Climate Coalition as a field co-ordinator for the up-coming Powershift in Brisbane. Powershift is a youth climate conference/festival, which will run from October 15-17. The program has not yet been confirmed, though it will consist of workshops and talks from influential speakers, before a mass public action at the conclusion of the conference.

In Sydney’s 2009 Powershift, Al Gore was one of the key speakers via video-link, and the public action was a large flash mob dance with thousands of youth volunteers on the steps of the Sydney Opera House, which gained substantial media attention (with over 134,000 You Tube views on one of the clips alone!). From what I have seen and heard, Powershift conferences have the ability to educate, connect, and inspire young people to take further action on climate change within their communities.

As a field co-ordinator, it is my role to ensure that as many people as possible are given the opportunity to attend this year’s Brisbane conference. The conference is open to anyone under 30. The early-bird tickets for the three day conference are $65, and if you require further financial assistance for travel, I can help you seek sponsorship.

You don’t have to be a “greenie”. You don’t have to be a political activist. You don’t have to be a student. We just want people who are willing to join us and become inspired! The voice of concerned youth is not being sufficiently represented, so it is we, the youth, who need to speak up now to re-shape the debate. It is us who will have to deal with the consequences of inaction, so I am making it my mission to help other young people move from apathy to taking action on climate change. I believe that Powershift is an event that has the ability to achieve this.

Power Shift youth climate summit is being launched today with Young Australian of the Year Jessica Watson and Home and Away actor Jessica Tovey

Today the Australian Youth Climate Coalition (AYCC) will launch a national recruitment
campaign for young Australians to attend Power Shift – Australia’s largest ever gathering of
young people calling for climate change action.

Two Power Shift summits will be held in Perth and Brisbane in September and October.

The Power Shift campaign will be launched across the country tomorrow, Tuesday, 16
August – in contrast to the “say no to everything” anti-carbon price rally in Canberra.

“Young people are working towards solutions. They are not buying into the fear campaigns
launched by vested interest groups saying “no” and holding Australia back,” said Ellen
Sandell (AYCC National Director).

In Sydney; actor and AYCC ambassador Jessica Tovey (Paper Giants: the Birth of Cleo,

Last weekend, 85 new members of the Power Shift Field Team came … Continue reading →

Last weekend, 85 new members of the Power Shift Field Team came together in Brisbane for two amazing days of training ahead of launching Power Shift recruitment. The Power Shift Field Team is made up of some pretty amazing young people from all over the Australia – here are three perspectives on the Brisbane training.

Moira, Canberra – I arrived in Brisbane on Friday feeling slightly apprehensive about the Power Shift Field Camp – having never been to Power Shift before, I didn’t really know what was expected of me or whether I would feel excluded. However it turned out to be one of the most amazing weekends I’d ever had!

There were young people from all around Australia, many of whom had never been involved in the AYCC or Power Shift before. We all came together to help make Power Shift 2011 incredible – and it will be incredible!

It is so exciting to think that all the wonderful and inspiring young people I met this weekend will be going back to their communities and spreading their enthusiasm, and I’m glad that I have the opportunity to be part of Power Shift 2011.

Zac, Geelong – Last weekend I was lucky enough to be one of the many young people that came together in Brisbane to be trained and inspired to take back to our communities the message of Power Shift 2011.

Through this weekend we heard from experienced campaigners and met other passionate, like-minded people. Together, we’ll be taking on our communities to promote Power Shift 2011.

We’ll be doing this through our personal stories. Over the weekend I realised that I don’t need to know all the facts – communicating our stories is the most powerful way to connect with people and convey the urgency of acting.

I left the weekend inspired, motivated and prepared for a big task ahead – bringing thousands of young people to Brisbane for Power Shift in October. I’m so excited for Power Shift, and can’t wait to be in Brisbane with thousands of young people ready to create extraordinary change!

Lochsley, Launceston – I had big expectations for the Power Shift training – all of which were met. It had a strong personal focus, developing our social connections as well as our skills and awareness. The camp did this in a way that let us realise the big picture: that we are all members of an amazing, interconnected movement.

“

Over the weekend I realised the incredible diversity of our movement; all these young people came from different backgrounds, with individual beliefs and values, but were brought together for a shared cause. We were no longer part of a school group, a city, a state, or even as members of the AYCC. We were part of a world-wide movement, and it motivated us to go back to our communities and let others join it as well.

Power Shift will show Australia that acting on climate change is not a battle between the left and right. It is a battle between the past and the future, and we as young people have been able to set aside our differences and unite for action.

Over the next 8 weeks, the Field Team will be bringing the Power Shift message to their local communities and getting together young people from all over Australia to make the journey to Power Shift 2011. If you’re interested in getting involved, email jane.stabb@youthclimatecoalition.org with your name, location and why you want to get involved.

Power Shift is more than just a climate summit – it’s a worldwide youth phenomenon, transforming the globe one continent at a time!

Power Shift started in the US in 2007, when 5,000 young people converged in Washington DC to start a national movement. The third US Power Shift was held earlier this year, and this time there were over 10,000 participants. Here’s what happened:

Across the Atlantic, our friends at the UK Youth Climate Coalition brought Power Shift to London in 2009. Inspired by our Sydney flashmob, here’s an action they pulled off on the lawns of the British Parliament. Nice work UKYCC!

And later this year, young people across Europe are planning simultaneous Power Shift summits that will span the entire continent.

If you ever wonder what the rest of the world is doing to address climate change, rest assured – wherever you go, you’ll find passionate young people taking action, sharing their vision, and starting the transformation we need to a world powered be renewable energy!

In October this year, we’re going to bring together over 1,000 young people in Brisbane and Perth for two amazing Power Shift conferences. This will be the biggest youth mobilisation that has ever been attempted in either city – and we can’t wait to make it happen!

The Power Shift story starts in Australia in 2009. The AYCC was barely a year old, and it was an event on a scale we’d never previously attempted: a three day summit to inspire, empower and activate 1,000 young people.

There were those who doubted we could do it, and who warned us against trying. But as the AYCC so often does, we decided to throw caution to the wind and attempt what seemed impossible.

And it was the best decision we ever made! Here is what happened.

If this was what we did in 2009, just imagine what we will achieve in 2011.

Since Power Shift 2009, The AYCC has grown from 5,000 members to over 60,000. We now have a grassroots network that spans the country – from Tasmania to Darwin and everywhere in between. We have run political campaigns that have captured the nation’s imagination, and empowered thousands of young people from all over Australia.

There’s one thing we can be certain of: Power Shift 2011 is going to be big.
